My current (June 2014) answer is:
 
Lately I have been using microsoft security essentials (defender in win8).  It has been as good as any.
None actually work that well any more, as they all tend to let things past. (1)
Kaspersky's is the current  "winner" in the "experts" testing. If you buy any of them just get the a/v version. 
No need for all the extra bells and whistles, they just tend to slow your computer down. 
But remember, the guys that clean computer viruses for a living use plain old Microsoft Security Essentials.
